Background: The courses that show up in Canvas are based off of Course Names and Sections in PowerSchool. In PowerSchool, a Course is the overall name of the class, and the Sections are the individual class periods. The vast majority of teachers want all of their Sections/Individual class periods combined into one class in Canvas, so we've automated Canvas course creation to do that. Sometimes, though, that's not the way every teacher wants it. In those cases.... it's time to Cross List!
Step 1:
Decide the total number of Canvas classes you want. Create those new classes by logging in to Canvas, and selecting "Start a New Course" on your Dashboard. "Start a New Course" for each individual class period you want to show up as it's own class on your dashboard. For example, English 1st Period and English 2nd Period. **NOTE: If it asks you "Which account the course will be associated with" - choose "Manually Created Courses."
****When your classes are ready to go leave, don't forget to Publish them.
Step 2:
Open each course you want to add sections of students to. In the address bar, there will be a 4-6 digit code. Copy or write down this code and remember which class it goes to. Repeat for each course you want to add classes to.
Step 3:
Next, on your Canvas Dashboard find the Canvas course that currently has the section/class period that you want to move to the new class you made in Step 2 and click on it to open it. Next, click on "Settings" at the bottom of the left-hand navigation menu. Then, click "Sections" at the top of the page next to "Course Details." Finally, click on the link to the section you want to move to your new class. On the next screen, there should be a button that says "Cross-List this Section." Click on it. In the "Or Enter Course ID" box, enter the 4-6 digit code you copied down in step 2 and click "Cross-List This Section"
In the example below, I'll be moving a section from "Lombardo - Computer Systems - T2" to "English 1st Period".
Step 4:
Repeat for all sections/courses you want to re-arrange
